Partnership with the Michel Lafon Education publishing house

Ivory Coast, Ghana, Cameroon, Senegal
2013

The books « Bouba and Zaza » stemming from the collection « Childhood Cultures » teach and disseminate awareness messages. « Bouba and Zaza – Childhood Cultures » is brought together within a partnership between Unesco and the Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA). The books are designed for the cultures of particular countries and are orientated towards civic values. They are created for young children, but are also a very good aid for educators and families. The collection does not shy from dealing with serious themes even though the audience is of a young age. This daring collection approaches sensitive themes such as the environment, illiteracy, girl’s education or AIDS with the purpose of breaking taboos and bringing awareness to children. A dozen themes were chosen by the Compagnie Fruitière Endowment Fund, for example « Bouba and Zaza respect water », « Bouba and Zaza cultivate peace », « Bouba and Zaza know how to say no ». This is practical learning through universal values.

THE COMPAGNIE FRUITIÈRE ENDOWMENT FUND IS COMMITTED TO THE LAFON-EDUCATION PUBLISHING HOUSE

In 2013, the Compagnie Fruitière Endowment Fund committed to the Lafon-Education publishing house to provide awareness books in schools within the Compagnie Fruitière plantations’ vicinity. Almost 6000 educational books from the collection Bouba and Zaza were distributed across Cameroon, Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana sites. The shipping line of the company ensured their transportation without any charge.

THE DISTRIBUTION OF A COLLECTION OF FICTION BOOKS FOR THE PURPOSE OF CIVIC AND MORAL EDUCATION

Civic education is made crosscutting and grounded in the daily life of the children with the help of these books. It is practical learning. The collection doesn’t hesitate to deal with serious subjects even though the audience is of a young age (AIDS, violence, sexual abuse, disability, etc.) The fictional narrative catches the children’s attention. The head principal of the Tisserins school located on the PHP plantation, tells us how she feels about this distribution: “Bouba and Zaza are like a vaccine against ignorance, … the children learn the “know how”, the “know-how-to-be” and manners”.
